Kan Tabs – recycling project
Kan Tabs is a community recycling project run by Lions Clubs across New Zealand to raise funds and awareness for Kidney Kids NZ. We collect aluminum can pull-tabs and clean aluminum wine bottle screw caps (with plastic liners removed) to sell for scrap metal recycling.
All recycling proceeds go directly to Kidney Kids NZ to support children with kidney disorders and their families.
You can help by collecting these at home and then contact us to organise how to get them to us.

College Debate
Each year we organise and run a college debate between two teams – one from Newlands College and one from Onslow College. The venue alternates between the colleges.
The 2026 debate is on 24 September at Onslow College.
A great opportunity to see young enthusiastic students debate a topical issue.

BBQ
A kiwi tradition – we run a sausage sizzle at Woolworths, Johnsonville from 11am to 2pm a couple of weekends each month to raise funds for our beneficiaries. Currently all funds raised go to a diabetes youth camp.

Gardening Project at The Johnsonville Club
Funded from the Jack Feeney Estate we have reinvigorated the garden outside the entrance to the Johnsonville Club with native plants. All ready for some mural art to be added in the summer.

Christmas Cake Sale
A festive tradition, the Lions Christmas Cake Sale features rich fruit cakes sold in branded boxes. These are now available to order – details below.
Cakes are also available from Lions members, at our regular sausage sizzle (Woolworths Johnsonville) and local events.
All proceeds go to community programmes.

Senior Citizens Christmas Party
The Johnsonville area Senior Citizens Christmas lunch organised and funded by the Johnsonville Charitable Trust has been supported by the Johnsonville Lions Club for many years.
Held at the Johnsonville Club ballroom which is decked out with a Christmas theme on two dates in December, this is a great event for people to come together.
A two-course buffet lunch with wine, beer and soft drinks is provided free to the invited guests.
This event is well supported by the Johnsonville Club, and other community service groups, with Johnsonville Lions Club members acting as greeters of arriving guests, and hosts at each table.

Ronald McDonald House Support
A special day for many of our Club’s members and volunteers, making and serving meals to families with children at Wellington Hospital.
Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on community-driven support. The Lions’ contributions—whether through local fundraising or international volunteerism—play a vital role in sustaining these services. The work of Lions clubs ensures families can stay close to their hospitalised children without the added burden of accommodation costs.

Glasses Recycling Programme
This programme, known as “Recycle for Sight,” collects used eyeglasses, refurbishes them, and distributes them to people in need—especially in the Pacific Islands.
Lions Clubs across New Zealand and globally accept donations of prescription glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses, and frames (both plastic and metal). Children’s glasses are especially needed.
We collect the glasses and send them to a process centre where they are inspected for damage (scratches, cracks, loose screws), cleaned using ultrasonic washers, measured for prescription strength and packed for redistribution.
